Vireo Advisors works with entrepreneurs and technology leaders, those public and private organizations with a culture of innovation that are proactive in meeting twenty-first century requirements for product performance. We use tools such as NANO LCRA to gain a perspective on the breadth of issues of potential import in sustainable product development. Our work connects the dots between technical performance and societal expectations to accelerate adoption of safer and better technologies.
We bring the latest science, our technical expertise and policy knowledge to advance our clients' technologies, including meeting regulatory requirements, protecting workers, demonstrating safety and conducting risk assessments.
We develop strategies for assessing, managing and communicating about the benefits and risks of emerging materials. We conduct technology and risk assessments, market analysis and research and assess the needs and requirements of key stakeholders. We assist developers of new technologies by evaluating technology performance, identifying market requirements and opportunities and determining needs to overcome potential barriers. We convene workshops on cutting-edge research topics, and engage experts across diverse disciplines to address issues affecting adoption. Tapping into our broad network, we connect people to the resources they need, whether they are technical, financial or external.
Whether they are advisory boards, regulators, customers, international advocacy organizations, or investors, internal and external stakeholders require robust and clear information to make sound decisions. Vireo Advisors recognizes these concerns and advises our clients on efforts to inform consumers, regulators and other decision makers about the benefits and impacts of their technological innovations.
Health and environmental risk analysis
We conduct research and develop risk assessments and environmental health and safety evaluations to support new product development, emerging contaminant reviews and site/process safety. We recommend screening-level, quantitative and life-cycle approaches for chemical and nanoscale substances. In addition, we incorporate cutting-edge science into safety assessments that address sources of uncertainty and perceptions of risk.
Regulatory requirements for new substances can differ according to both market and product categories, while new policies may also affect existing substances. We keep up-to-date on international regulatory policies for new and emerging substances, which allows us to provide sound advice to entrepreneurs and companies commercializing products in the bio-based and nanomaterials innovation space. In specialized cases, we draw on our wide network of policy and legal experts to provide guidance and support submissions.
NANO Life Cycle Risk Assessment
Developed by Jo Anne Shatkin, NANO LCRA is an iterative, screening-level risk analysis framework that evaluates risks and data requirements across the product life cycle to inform early decision making about innovations and novel nanoscale technologies. The iterative assessment process is targeted to today’s decision making – the current state of uncertainty about the environmental and biological behavior of nanomaterials. This framework provides a sound scientific basis for sustainable nanotechnology development.
Taking an adaptive approach, LCRA is not an alternative to regulation and standard setting; it is a path forward that collects the best available information early in the design process to ensure new products, technologies and materials are designed to be safe and sustainable. This path allows adaptation to new information, decision making under uncertainty, and a manageable process for identifying and prioritizing concerns about health and environmental risks.
We analyze the complex business, technical and political landscapes for novel products and technologies. Since emerging technologies can be challenging to assess in terms of market potential, we help innovators to understand the regulatory, consumer and market requirements for performance and safety, informing sound commercialization strategies and business planning. Our strategies help to overcome common sources of resistance to adoption
Environmental due diligence/benefits analysis
Vireo evaluates the environmental performance of technologies to aid investors and others to assess the benefits and claims of a particular technology and potential environmental and financial risks as well as potential in the marketplace. Many technologies claim to be “clean” or “sustainable” or to offer unique benefits. Leveraging a broad network of expertise, we assess manufacturer claims and data to provide a critical analysis of market risks and relative position.
Expert peer review
Technology assessment methods vary widely. We provide a detailed and thorough review of models, assumptions and limitations, ultimately improving confidence in an analysis.
