Our Clients, Our Work, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

We work with organizations developing innovative solutions for sustainability challenges, assisting them in realizing commercial opportunities that meet present-day needs while safeguarding resources for future generations. We partner with clients who share our dedication to making a positive impact on the environment and society. Together, we strive to address the pressing challenges that governments worldwide have prioritized, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable and healthy food

Food insecurity and sustainability goals are addressed by providing alternative sources of protein that do not rely on animal agriculture, reducing the pressure on land, water, and other resources. The development and adoption of cultured meat and foods from precision fermentation is aligned with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2, 3, 8, 12 & 13), promoting sustainable food production, improving public health, creating new economic opportunities, and reducing environmental impacts.

Bio-based materials

Renewable materials derived from plant-based sources have the potential to replace conventional fossil-oil-based materials and commercialization of these materials is aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 9, 12, 13, 14, 15). Examples of our client’s innovations in this area include nano-cellulose, a high performance additive derived from forest products, and lab-grown alternatives to animal leather for the fashion and textile industries.

Upcycled waste

Plastic waste is a major contributor to marine pollution, with negative impacts on marine ecosystems and human health. We are partnering with companies that are diverting this waste, creating new materials on a commercial scale, working towards a more circular economy, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 9, 12, 13, 14 and 15).

Carbon capture and utilization

Net removal of CO2 generated by industrial emissions is necessary to meet climate change targets. The most compelling approaches transform this climate bad actor into commercially attractive products while also reducing the demand for fossil oil in chemicals production. Our clients are using captured CO2 to creating additives that provide structural strength or toughness, or thermal or electrical conductivity to advanced materials, supporting progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 9, 12, 13 and 15).

Ensuring safe and sustainable product development

Techniques for measurement and verification of progress towards sustainability goals are critical components in product development, starting from the earliest stages of innovation, through pilot plant and scale up to commercialization. This is Vireo’s core competence. We provide our partners with the tools, and knowledge they need as they develop new materials, products and processes, and support them as they demonstrate the safety and sustainability to regulators, investors and consumers around the world.
