Vireo Advisors, LLC and partners have received funding to advance the commercialization of a microfibrillated cellulose-based sustainable packaging solution to replace single-use plastic packaging for specialty crops in key global markets.

In August 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) announced that its longstanding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) would expire on October 1, 2024. Via this MoU, FDA provided scientific and technical assistance to AAFCO to support its ingredient definition request process.

A genetically modified yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae with lactate dehydrogenase from Rhizopus oryzae, was named "Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) by the FDA Office of Food Additive Safety on January 16, 2019, for use as a processing aid in beer manufacturing.

The plant-based Impossible Burger will be available for purchase in U.S. retail stores in September 2019 following FDA approval for use of soy leghemoglobin as a color additive.
