‍FDA has advanced a rulemaking on GRAS Notification requirements for substances used in human and animal food. The proposed rule is included in the latest federal Unified Agenda under RIN 0910-AJ02 and is listed for publication in December 2026. If finalized, companies would be required to submit GRAS notices to FDA for certain substance uses.

A genetically modified yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae with lactate dehydrogenase from Rhizopus oryzae, was named "Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) by the FDA Office of Food Additive Safety on January 16, 2019, for use as a processing aid in beer manufacturing.

The plant-based Impossible Burger will be available for purchase in U.S. retail stores in September 2019 following FDA approval for use of soy leghemoglobin as a color additive.
