Canada to publish prioritization of nanoscale substances in 2018

Health Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada are currently in the process of completing a prioritization of nanomaterials on their Domestic Substances List. The results from the prioritization are expected to be completed and published in 2018.

The prioritization is using information that was received following a mandatory information-gathering rule of nanomaterials in February of 2016. According to the Chemicals Management Plan Progress Report, 53 nanoscale substances were identified as being manufactured and/or imported in Canada.

The prioritization is to be used, in conjunction with a risk assessment framework that is currently being developed, to help identify potential risks to human health and the environment that may be posed by nanomaterials in commerce.
