Vireo Advisors Co-Author “Risk Analysis of Cellulose Nanomaterials by Inhalation: Current State of Science”

Led by Dr. James Ede, the Vireo team co-authored a study in a special issue of the open access journal Nanomaterials with Michael Goergen and Alan Rudie entitled "Risk Analysis of Cellulose Nanomaterials by Inhalation: Current State of Science". The article presents a literature analysis of studies relevant to inhalation exposure to cellulose nanomaterial (CN) dusts. The studies were examined to assess their quality for risk assessment purposes using published study evaluation tools for nanomaterials. The analysis generally found the quality of the studies to be inadequate for risk assessment purposes. Knowledge of short term CN inhalation has advanced to suggest that short-term exposure to CNs results in transient inflammation only. However, precaution is still advised because data-gaps remain and more research is necessary to evaluate effects from long-term, low-dose exposures which more relevant to workplace conditions.
