Vireo Publishes “Translating Scientific Advances in the AOP Framework to Decision Making for Nanomaterials”

Vireo Advisors, as part of a collaboration with SmartNanoTox, a leading EU-funded nanosafety consortia published “Translating Scientific Advances in the AOP Framework to Decision Making for Nanomaterials”; available in the journal Nanomaterials.

The work outlines the current status and next steps to develop and use adverse outcome pathways (AOP) for decision making about the safety of manufactured nanomaterials (MNs). Views and feedback from stakeholders (including experts, researchers, policymakers, regulators, risk assessors and industry representatives) concerning the current status, needs and requirements to allow for future use of AOPs in MN risk assessment are presented from two workshops hosted as part of an OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN), project titled, “Advancing AOP Development for Nanomaterial Risk Assessment and Categorization”.

The article provides an overview of the AOP framework; its current status and applications for MN decision making; as well as challenges in adopting the framework for MNs. These considerations alongside stakeholder feedback are organized into a roadmap of central recommendations, each broken out into short-, medium- and long-term actions, to promote the development, use, and acceptance of the AOP framework for MN decision making.
